ピーター・ティールに憧れて / Admiring Peter Thiel

最近自身が憧れている人物の1人としてピーター・ティールがあげられる。
推しといってもいいかもしれない。
Palantirをはじめとする数々のスタートアップ企業の設立に関与し、シリコンバレーを代表する起業家兼投資家であると同時に、尚も世間を席巻するペイパル・マフィアのドンだ。
昨今はリバタリアンとして米国政治に大きな影響を及ぼしていることもあって、人によって賛否両論評価が分かれる人物であるのは間違いない。
そんな彼の過去の発言からはかなり魅力的な言葉が語られている。
日本語で言うところの中二病じみたもの多いのかもしれない。
"競争は弱者のもの","ラスト・ムーバーを目指せ","まず小さな市場から独占しよう…" なかでも個人的にお気に入りなのは、模倣の欲望ことミメーシスに関連した文脈で語られた言葉だ。
"失敗のパターンはだいたい似通っているが、成功の仕方は多種多様である"
多数派の真似事なんかしなくていい、君自身が信じた道を行け…そう生き方を肯定してくれているように感じる。
天からの贈り物とも思えるぐらい、今現在の自身のとって彼の思想との出会いはこの上なく幸福だとも思う。
この先例え彼の思想を忘れてしまったとしても、それらを基盤に据えた考え方や行動は無意識のうちにつながっていくんだと思う。
だから今後も必要に応じて彼の動向はキャッチアップしていきたい、そう考える。
One of the people I’ve recently come to admire is Peter Thiel.
You could even say he’s one of my favorites.
He has been involved in founding numerous startup companies, including Palantir, and while he is one of Silicon Valley’s best-known entrepreneurs and investors, he is also the godfather of the still-influential PayPal Mafia.
In recent years, he has also had a major impact on U.S. politics as a libertarian, so it’s no surprise that opinions about him are sharply divided. Still, some of the things he has said in the past are remarkably compelling. In Japanese terms, a lot of them might be said to have a kind of chūnibyō vibe.
“Competition is for losers”, “Aim to be the last mover”, “First, monopolize a small market…”
What I personally like best, though, is a line he said in the context of mimesis.
“The patterns of failure are more or less similar, but the ways of succeeding are varied.”
You don’t need to imitate the majority; it feels as if he is affirming the idea of following the path you yourself believe in.
It may be no exaggeration to say that, for me right now, discovering his way of thinking has been an immense source of happiness—almost like a gift from above.
Even if I were to forget his ideas someday, I believe the ways of thinking and acting built on them would still continue to connect beneath the surface, unconsciously.
So I want to keep up with his movements as needed going forward.
